PLANTING MATERIALS

Choice of planting materials (seeds, cuttings, tissue culture, etc) depend on tree species, the nature of the soil, and degree of site preparation.

The usage of quality planting materials i.e. from the plus trees/superior mother trees as well as from genetically improved seeds, produce plantations that are more vigour, higher resistance to pests and diseases, and uniform in growth.

Aim:

  • To advice our borrowers the main criteria needed in selection of plus tree in order to obtain supply of high quality seeds
  • To better understand the choice of identified geographic sources, and its physical and chemical requirements.
  • To collaborate with Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) and Rubber Research Institute Malaysia (RRIM) in providing advice to our customers who adopts tree improvement program either through tree breeding program and molecular genetics for purpose of becoming self-sufficient in planting materials. This is important as it meets our needs in understanding the process in developing improved planting materials for your tree growth performance.
  • Monitoring the growth pattern and yield of tree species seed sources and planting materials in ensuring quality planting materials to forest plantation developers.

DEVELOPMENT OF IMPROVED PLANTING MATERIALS

a) Using vegetative materials e.g. Hevea brasiliensis, Tectona grandis, etc. The process of development of improved planting materials using vegetative materials is described in the flow chart below.

b) Using seeds e.g. Acacia mangium,Paraserianthes falcataria, etc. In general, the process for development of improved planting materials for trees species using seeds is described in the flow chart below.

Nursery

Careful nursery site selection and planning are necessary to achieve an economical production of high quality nursery stock. Unsatisfactory site selection results increase in cost of operations, high seedling losses, and poor stock production.
